KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Government has welcomed Singapore’s decision to establish a consulate in Kota Kinabalu this year, describing the move as a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations between Sabah and the republic.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said the establishment of the consulate carries strategic importance, particularly in enhancing cooperation in economic, diplomatic, investment, trade and security matters between Sabah and Singapore.
He expressed confidence that Singapore’s official presence in the state would further expand bilateral collaboration, paving the way for increased investment inflows and trade opportunities that would directly contribute to Sabah’s development.
“The State Government welcomes Singapore’s decision to open a consulate in Sabah this year. This is a positive development that will further strengthen the long-standing ties between Sabah and Singapore,” he said.
Hajiji made the remarks during a courtesy call by the Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency Vanu Gopala Menon, at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Thursday.
The Chief Minister also encouraged more Singaporean investors to explore Sabah’s competitive sectors, including tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and downstream industries, while expressing hope for an increase in tourist arrivals from the republic.
Meanwhile, Vanu Gopala Menon said Singapore would establish consulates in both Sabah and Sarawak following approval granted by the Malaysian Government last month.
On December 4, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong welcomed Malaysia’s official approval for the proposed consulates, describing it as an important milestone in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
