KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor has urged that the marked improvement in security within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESS Zone) be communicated more effectively to foreign missions in Malaysia, including embassies and high commissions, with a view to encouraging a review of existing travel advisories for Sabah’s east coast.
He said the sustained improvement — most notably the absence of any kidnap-for-ransom incidents since January 2020 — deserves to be brought to the attention of the international community in order to strengthen confidence among foreign governments and travellers alike.
“This is important so that foreign missions can reassess the situation and subsequently consider lowering their travel advisories for Eastern Sabah, based on the security realities on the ground today.
“Doing so will enhance the confidence of international tourists and encourage more visitors to experience the many attractive destinations along Sabah’s east coast,” he said while co-chairing the ESS Zone Joint Committee Meeting with Home Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Saifuddin Nasution Ismail at Menara Kinabalu here today.
Hajiji described the overall security situation in the ESS Zone as stable and firmly under control, noting that he had recently visited six islands within Sabah waters to inspect security posts and assess the operational readiness of personnel stationed in the area.
He said the absence of kidnap-for-ransom cases over the past six years stands as clear testament to the effectiveness and dedication of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), and other security agencies operating in the zone.
“I wish to record my highest appreciation to ESSCOM, PDRM, ATM, APMM and all security agencies for their unwavering commitment and sacrifices in safeguarding the security of Eastern Sabah’s waters and territory,” he said.
The Chief Minister affirmed that the State Government will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Home Affairs and all relevant agencies to further strengthen security operations — through enhanced operational capabilities, improved strategic assets, heightened preparedness, and greater attention to the welfare of security personnel. Also present at the meeting were State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman and Home Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Dr Awang Alik Jeman.
