GRS Supreme Council to have final say on election matters: Hajiji

The GRS chairman says a collective decision will be made after taking into account the views of its components.

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s Supreme Council will have the final say on matters related to the upcoming state election, the coalition’s chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said, following a call for an electoral pact between GRS, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Hajiji, the Sabah chief minister, said such an approach was important to ensure that any decision made reflects the coalition’s views and wants in the interest of political stability.

“We will refer to the GRS Supreme Council to decide on the matter,” he was quoted saying by local portal, referring to the meeting with PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.

Hajiji also said that political stability was the main priority for the state government.

Yesterday, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim said he was optimistic that the three coalitions would be able to reach an agreement for the state election.

Anwar, the prime minister, said Hajiji had his full support to lead discussions on an election pact between GRS, PH, and BN.

Hajiji for his part said the cooperation between GRS and Sabah PH had been smooth.

“The current state government was established following an alliance between GRS and PH, and until today, there are no issues,” he said.

On Friday, GRS threatened to go solo at the state polls if PH and BN finalised an electoral pact, with Hajiji saying that local Sabah parties should be the backbone and head of the state government.
